INSURANCE FOR THOSE ON THE MOVE
As the economy continues to improve, shipments increase, and building becomes more pervasive, the need for inland marine insurance grows. This type of insurance, whose name alludes to its development as an outgrowth of ocean marine insurance, provides property coverage for construction equipment, medical diagnostic equipment, fine arts, solar panels and wind turbines, cameras and movie equipment, musical instruments, and other types of property. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, inland marine insurers paid in excess of $200 million in fine arts losses. Often referred to as “transportation” insurance, inland marine insurance provides broadened coverage and loss settlement provisions for classes of property that are often excluded or limited by other policies, such as a homeowners policy.
NOTE: Generally speaking, inland marine insurance covers property that is movable or transportable, and often covers property that needs broader protection than what may be provided by the typical property policy.
